Hey there! As you can see, I abandoned this blog a while ago. To say life got the best of me would be an understatement. We moved to a new house, Miss B has been super sick, and we are in the process of adopting a little boy. I know- crazy right?!?! So, forgive me for my lack of blogging. I can't promise more posts but I will post when I can since it seems people are still visiting the blog, mainly for my Wilder's World Review. Hope you all are giving them lots of business- we still go there occasionally. It's a great place!

Monsters VS Aliens at the Grand

The series starts our with Monsters vs. Aliens!!

Island Time Panama City Review

This is a bit of a different review since I didn't take B on this outing. I had some friends in town for a girls' weekend (no kids!) and wanted to show them the best of PCB!

I found a bargain in Island Time Sailing and I think you would have fun taking your elementary aged children on this snorkeling trip!

Cost: $30 when you mention the web coupon
Includes 3 1/2 hour cruise on their sailing catamaran and a light lunch.
I called the day before the make reservations and the girl was very nice. She took my credit card to reserve our spot and told us to be there at 9:30 the next day to check in. The boat left at 10am. We had no problems checking in and sat under their shaded waiting area before boarding. The boat crew was very nice and gave great instructions on what to do. I had a great time watching them raise the sails- I don't think I've ever been on any kind of sailboat before.

Our first stop was a sand bar in Grand Lagoon. They provided snorkel, mask, and swim fins and gave us some basic instructions before we headed down the stairs and into the water.

The water was beautiful and clear and we some some fish, crabs, sea urchins, star fish, sand dollars, and even a sea horse. The crew provided a bucket that you could put your finds in and they would pull the bucket up to the boat. Once back on the boat, we got to look at everyone's "finds" before releasing them back into the water. All in all, a very fun experience. If you've been snorkeling in other places besides PCB, like us in the Virgin Islands, make sure you adjust your expectations. You won't see the wide variety or abundance of fish, coral, etc., that you see in the Caribbean. But it's till fun to take a peak into the underwater world.

After snorkeling we had a light lunch of a turkey sandwich, chips, and a soda. It wasn't much but you wouldn't want a big lunch before swimming.

After lunch, we hunted for dolphins. We saw a few groups of them which is always fun! If the waters are calm and they can get close enough, they let you get in with the dolphins. We were fortunate to be able to get in the water with the dolphins but they never came close to the group. I also had a run in with a little jelly fish. It only stung for ten minutes but was enough to get me out of the water.

On the way back to the shore, they played music and led a few games which was fun.

I highly recommend this trip. It was a good deal and for a special treat, would be a fun family outing! I don't suggest taking children under 5 or children that can't swim. If your child isn't ready to snorkel, then this trip isn't the one for you. But if they are then I think you'll really enjoy it!

Chick Fil A- Panama City Beach Parkway

Can I just tell you how much I love Chick Fil A?!?! I love thier food, their customer service, their playground, their Christian background. I LOVE them!!

We go to Chick Fil A on the beach at least once a week. B has been playing on their playground since she learned how to walk (maybe even before that). It is a mom's haven on a hot, cold, or rainy day. There is a place for parents to sit and B always has fun climbing on the indoor slide and maze. They even have individual moist towelettes in the playground so you can clean up before you leave and eat.

And the playground is only one part of the experience. You all know thay have great food. Rarely do they get your order wrong. And if they do, you can expect a coupon for a free sandwhich because of the inconvenience. They have a bowl of mints for after you eat. They give you a disposable placemat for your kids. They'll bring you your meal to your table if your hands are full or if the food isn't ready right away. They come around and ask if you need anything, including a drink refill. The store is clean. The staff are friendly. And they genuinely love my daughter, often offering her ice cream or a kind word. I love Chick Fil A!!

I'm not sure how they do it but businsesss sure could learn a lot from them!! Good job Chick Fil A!!!

Wilder's World Panama City Beach Review

Wilder's World is a brand new business on Panama City Beach. Much like Pump It Up, it boasts a room full of inflatables for children to play, climb, and slide on. Pump It Up, which is in town is only open to children 2 and above so we haven't been there yet. Wilder's World is open to all ages and has toys that are appropriate for the younger crowd.

We went with a playgroup so we got a discounted rate- we paid $6.50 which was to include a slice of pizza and a Capri Sun plus unlimited play. Adults are free.

Since, the place is new, it was extremely clean. I liked that- I hope they keep it that clean as it gets used more. We went in, signed a paper, paid our money and got a wrist band for B. I kind of wish they had a system like Chuck E. Cheese does where the parent and child get matching wrist bands and you have to show your wristband to leave with that child. But I was with B the whole time, so not a problem for us.

B was very intimidated by the bouncy inflatables at first but it didn't take her long to get brave. The staff was VERY helpful and that made it all the easier to get her having fun! Before long, she was climbing up and sliding down with the big kids. It was A BLAST!! She also checked out the toddler areas (kids 3 and under only) which had basketball hoops, a plastic bowling set, hula hoops, and toddler toys. How nice that they have this for the younger kids! There were also several couches for the grownups plus some picnic type tables. I hear they also have Wi Fi but I was busy chasing B so I didn't check that out. To sum up the inflatables, there is one huge obstacle course (very hard for little ones to go on without parental help) and big slide that B could do all by her self, two regular bounce houses, and one ship themed house with stair and slide that B could do by herslef with no trouble.

After much bouncing, I noticed we had a soggy diaper going on, so I asked about the bathroom and was disappointed to learn that the changing tables have not come in yet. Seems a bit odd to start a brand new business for children without a changing table available but I'll give them the beneift of the doubt and say maybe changing tables are on back order. So after a quick trip to our car, we were back in action.

The staff was busy keeping kids entertained. They did some interactive games (roller rink style- think the Chicken Dance) and if there was a traffic jam on an inflatable they would climb right up and help out. I can't say enough about their helpfulness on the inflatables! A+++ to those guys and gals!

B could have played all day but when she slid down a slide and stuck her thumb in her mouth and just sat at the end of the slide, I new we had hit naptime. I waited for someone to come to the snack bar area (about 5 minutes) and this is where our visit took a turn. We had paid $2 for pizza and a drink and so I let the girl know that we were ready to eat. She said that the pizza wouldn't be here for 20 more minutes, could we wait? I explained that it was B's naptime and I didn't think she could make it that long and I asked if there was something else she could have. She offered a PB&J which I declined (I was thinking B probably wouldn't eat that and we have bread at home). The lady was annoyed to say the least. She rolled her eyes at me when I asked for my money back and never once apologized for the misunderstanding about the pizza.

I say it was a misunderstanding because my guess is that the playgroup we were with arranged to have them order pizza and to have it there at a certain time. I didn't know that or else I wouldn't have ordered. So, it may have been my mistake (maybe I should have just taken the PBJ and been done with it). However, she only lost $2 and the cost of one slice of pizza and capri sun probably wasn't even $2. So, MAYBE, they lost $1.25-$1.50 on us. So even if it was my mistake, was it worth her having a bad attitude about? I am going to go with no. I even apologized to her and explained the situation again and she said nothing to me. Just handed me my $2. In a hard economic crisis, with a brand new business, I would definitely not treat customers this way.

Now I really like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was a bad day. I am not always the mom I want to be and sometimes I say things to B that I wish I could take back. So, maybe this lady was having the same kind of moment. I'll give her a second chance, especially since it was partially my fault. But I must say that my initial excitement was squashed a little by my experience at the snack bar.

I really like to see businesses go above and beyond. I like friendly faces, encouraging words, helpfulness, and quality. Maybe the lady from Wilder's World needs to take a trip across the street to Chick Fil A- they are a superior example of service and hospitality. I'll talk about them tomorrow!
Update Oct. 2010: We have since been back to Wilder's World and received great service from the staff!

So, please give Wilder's World a try. It's really a fun place and the staff that interacted with the kids were GREAT, STELLAR, AWESOME. Just don't pay for a slice of pizza and ask for your money back when the pizza isn't there and your kid's about to meltdown.

The Cultural Arts Association of Walton County brings the ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival to it's new home, Seaside just two miles down Scenic Hwy. 30-A from Grayton Beach where in 1989, the event was founded and lived for seven years.

ArtsQuest features over 115 juried artists showcasing their works throughout Seaside over the Mother's Day Weekend. Live entertainment, interactive art booths and other activities make it fun for the entire family.

Yes, you can find Nemo in the park! He'll big on the big screen in the Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater (the amphitheater next to Pier Park) on Friday, April 30 at 7:45 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and some snacks and cozy up for an outdoor movie. What fun!! It looks like you can also purchase popcorn and beverages at the park.

I found this cool website today and wanted to share (plus I get $10 for every referral and you can't beat that)!

It's called Jasmere and basically they are highlighting relatively unknown but cool website businesses. Each day they feature a new business with a really good deal. The more people that buy the deal, the less you pay. They don't charge you until the end of the deal. So for example, today I bought two vouchers (currently $9 a piece). Each voucher is worth $25 at the business that turns your pictures into tiles you can hang on your wall. It was $11 a voucher earlier in the day but has already dropped to $9 and could go lower depending on how many people purchase vouchers. Whatever the lowest price is, that is what I'll be charged. Make sense?

Yesterday the company that was featured sold bags, aprons, t-shirts, etc. that you could draw on with chalk. Cool company but I didn't bid. I am excited about watching this site for some cool deals.

U pick Strawberries

We went strawberry picking a few weeks ago and boy was it fun! The strawberries are SO good. You can even sample them as you're pickin. Have you ever eaten a fresh, warm strawberry? You should!

Sweatmore Ranch also has all kinds of animals- a peacock, chickens, a bull, and calves (you can pet the calves).

It's a great day of fun for kids and parents! There's an $8 minimum and then it's $1.89 a pound. They provide you with a box and show you where to start picking. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen and a hat. Bring a change of clothes for you and the kiddos. It gets messy when the kids are sampling.

I warn that this is not a relaxing activity. Chasing a toddler down a strawberry field with a box of strawberries in hand, trying to keep them from picking the non ripe strawberries, teaching them not to sample every strawberry going in the box, and making sure you get the best strawberries out there is not an easy task. But let me tell you, it is SO worth it! I made some freezer jam with our strawberries and my husband loved it so much, he had 4 pieces of toast in one sitting!

For Earth today we'll be going outside!!! Yay! I also plan to repurpose a milk jug into a watering can for B to use on our garden. I plan to poke holes in the bottom of the jug so that when we fill it up with water it will allow her to easily water the garden.

Here's a craft I found on DLTK'S Growing Together Website. There are instructions and template on the page for this craft.

Earth Day Handprint Wreath

This one comes with a choice of an earth template for the center or a template that allows you to write a message about why you want to protect the planet.

Materials:
•glue,
•scissors,
•blue, brown and green paint or construction paper.
•thread, ribbon or string

Directions:
•There are two ways to do this craft. One is to trace the child's hand onto paper and cut out the prints. The second is to make paint handprints on the paper, let them dry and cut those out.
•The project can be made in teams of two or three children. This is especially helpful if you are tracing the hands instead of making paint prints. The kids can trace each others handprints.
•Make twelve handprints (4 of each colour).
•Cut out the prints and glue to form a wreath.
•You can decorate the wreath further with stickers (like flowers, birds, butterflies -- anything nature related).
•Print one of the templates for the center of the wreath
•Colour the template piece, if necessary and cut it out.
•If using the 'message' template, finish the sentence: 'The earth is worth protecting because'
•We used a piece of thread to hang the template piece in the center of the wreath

Another Savvy Source Activity... from experience I would say that older preschool age would probably do better with this. We had fun but B didn't quite get it.

1. Fill an ice cube tray with water.

2. Put a drop of food coloring in each cube. We used a variety of colors.

3. Freeze the ice cubes.

4. Once frozen, pop the cubes out and place in a bowl.
5. Let children use the melting cubes outside to paint on a white piece of paper. The colors mix and it looks pretty.

This was another playgroup venture. We loved it. If you have a little one, you do have to follow them around to make sure they don't get hurt but it's still fun. The park seems well maintained and everyone had fun. Check it out!

Homemade Music Shaker

1.Take a toilet paper tube and cover one end with a square piece of construction paper and secure with a rubber band (I used a children's hair tie)
2. Put some beans, rice, or other shake worthy material in the roll.
3. Repeat step one on the open end of the TP roll.

4. Cover the whole thing with construction paper and tape or glue. I taped cause it's easier.

5. Let your child decorate it with crayons, markers, paint, stickers, whatever you have on hand.

6. Shake, shake, shake!!!

It's that time of the year again- Beach time!!!

The water is still a bit cold but that means it's not oppressively hot outside yet so you can stay out longer with the wee ones! Here's what you need for a great afternoon at the beach.

Bathing suits and water wings or flotation device if needed
swim diaper (bring and extra too)
Swimsuit cover up
hat/sunglasses for you and the little one
Sunscreen- apply before leaving the house
Towels to leave in the car- so they won't get sandy when your toddler digs into your beach bag with their sandy hands
Beach blanket or large towel
Beach chair
Sun shade tent or umbrella
Bottle of water
Sippy cup of water
some snacks like dried fruit or crackers
Sand toys- bucket, shovels, etc. You can always use measuring cups and plastic bowls in a pinch. A kite would be fun too!
A wet washcloth in a ziplock bag (handy for face plants in the sand)
Fresh diaper, wipes, and change of clothes
A really big bag to put it all in- we found a great one at a garage sale for 50 cents!

We went to the Oakland Terrace Park yesterday and I wanted to review if for you guys. I don't have any pics though, sorry.....

We've been hanging out with a new playgroup and having a blast. This week we headed to Oakland Terrace Park to play with our new friends. The park is pretty large with a section for kids 5 and up and a section for ages 2-5. I appreciate when parks do this- the big kids are a little rough for my little one sometimes. Both parts had plenty of stairs, ramps, and slides. The little kid area also had some tunnels and some sit on/pretend to drive toys like a car, plane, helicopter. The big kid area had some fun looking stuff too like climbing walls, wobbly bridge, etc. And there was a swing area complete with "baby" and big kid swings. There's even a porch style swing near the little kid area for the adults to sit on. But it could use a can of WD-40.

Overall, I like the park. There's not too many younger kid playgrounds around, so that was nice. But the park could use a few repairs. One part of the little kid playground seemed to be missing the steps up to the platform and the slide/tunnel seemed really high off the ground. The helicopter's control panel needed a new bolt to hold it down. But the park was fairly clean and the kids had a good time! We'd go there again but it's not up on my top favorite parks in PC.

I came across a website the other day that has tons of great activities for kids. We've been trying some out and I am working on getting those posted for you to try as well.

The frist one we tried has been my favorite so far. It's also one of those activities that you think,"Why didn't I come up with that myself?"

Painting with Water

All you do is provide your child with a paintbrush, a bucket of water, and a driveway on a warm day and voila- a great activity! B LOVED it and probably played for half an hour or more at this. Another friend of ours tried it and her son ~~painted~~ played in the water for an hour! Activity success with no mess!!

The Annual Blessing of the Fleet is a traditional maritime event in most ports with large sea-going populations such as Panama City. Religious representatives commemorate those who were lost at sea the previous year and ask Gods blessing for those who make their living from the sea and pray for continued safe passage of all vessels.

The Stainless Steel and Calypso bands will provide musical entertainment throughout the day. The U.S. Coast Guard will provide a flyover as we stand for the pledge and national anthem.
This is a wonderful spectator event and a great day on the water. Joey Farrill a local baseball product and businessman is fighting for his life. Less than a year ago Joey was diagnosed with throat cancer and basically given a death sentence by local doctors. Refusing to give up, Joey sought out the best at UAB in Birmingham and was offered a rigorous combination of Chemo and Radiation. Though Joey has a ways to go, his attitude gives us all hope on how to deal with life's curveballs.

Little history on Joey Farrill...Graduated from Mosley in 1979. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates that same year. Joey set his sights on Gulf Coast to play baseball. In 1980 Joey was drafted by the Boston Red Sox but refused again and stayed local at Gulf Coast to finish out his commitment. Troy Campbell who played baseball with Joey and was his catcher for many years said "we all thought we where good back then. but Joey was the real deal...he could throw a baseball 95 MPH and 100MPH if he was mad. Troy said he was even offered a scholarship to play football at Alabama but he refused and focused on baseball. An injury cut short Joeys baseball career just as it was taking off. While it might have been easy to move away from the game, Joey refused and used his God given skills to teach many of the youth of Bay County how to play the game. Spending hundreds of hours at the ball fields all over Bay County Joey would scout and teach those who wanted to move to the next level.

Having lost his business and out of work indefinitely Joey needs some help. While he has insurance to pay most medical bills the rest of life's payables are mounting against him while he fights to save his life.

Hammerhead Fred's is hosting a $10/plate fish fry on Wed February 10 at 6pm with 100% of the proceeds going to help Joey and his family get through this ordeal.

I figured to help me keep up a little better with this blog that I will try to do this occasionally. I will post what we did the day before so that you will have some dieas of what you can do for the day if you need them. Because aren't there just days where you wake up and think, "What are we going to do all day?"

Yesterday we:
1. Worked on these cute Valetine's cards. ADORABLE!

2. We went to the playground at Frank Brown Park. In case you don't know, their playground is huge and so much fun for kids. There was hardly anyone there yesterday and it was beautiful out!
3. Liza's Kitchen for lunch to go. UM, if you haven't been to Liza's- you are missing out!!!! YUM-O!!!

4. A trip to the public library to play at the lego table, return some books, and pick up some new ones.

5. In the time we had at home, we watched cartoons, ate, took naps, looked at ants outside, collected berries and twigs in a watering can, played pretend with makeup brushes, played with a muffin tin, colored, danced and sang, and read. Oh and B colored on the tile floor. They were washable and she helped me clean it up.

Back in December, we visited the Pottery Bar in Edgewater Shopping Center on Panama City Beach. What a gem of a place! Friendly helpful service and an outlet for creativity combine to give the perfect activity for your little one.

Basically, you pick out your pottery piece, your paints, any stencils you want and then you sit and create your masterpiece. The staff are very helpful and guide you as much as you need. They even have snacks you can purchase so you don't have to paint on an empty stomach. After you're done painting, you leave your piece there and they fire it up in the kiln. A few days later, you have your beautiful pottery to take home.

We decided to make a tile (can be used as a trivet or wall hanging) with B's handprint. B got to paint the tile first and then one of the emplyees helped her put her handprint over her painting. I added her name and date and voila! Older kids would be able to do more and we will certainly be back as gets older.

Did I mention they had high chairs for the little ones? Well, they do!!

Turkey Day! It's the name little ones often use to refer to Thanksgiving. And no wonder. From the moment we put that big bird in the oven till the last of the leftovers are gone, the focus of Thanksgiving is usually the food. But most of us would like to move "beyond the turkey" and teach our kids what it really means to be thankful.

This year, take advantage of the Thanksgiving season and use it as a chance to nurture a sense of real gratitude in your family. The Bible tells us to "give thanks to the Lord for he is good" (Ps. 107:1) and to "enter his gates with thanksgiving" (Ps. 100:4). That attitude is often lost in our "I want more" culture, and encouraging thankfulness in children is no small task. But when children understand what it means to be grateful, they begin to develop an awareness of all that God has given them as well as a sense of real contentment. These ideas can help:

SHARE SOME HISTORY

Make your children aware of America's early history and the true background of Thanksgiving.

1. Read about it. Check out children's books that recount great stories for this season, like Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas (Tommy Nelson). Historically accurate accounts of the story of Pocahontas also give your children a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding Thanksgiving.

2. Go hunting. Plan a Pilgrim scavenger hunt. Give each participant a basket and a list of items the Pilgrims might have been familiar with. Then hide these objects throughout the house or the yard for your kids to find: dried corn, small pumpkins, pinecones, a toy boat, small Native American figures.

TELL A STORY

Children of all ages love stories. Take advantage of their natural interest by using stories to reinforce the importance of gratitude in our lives.

3. Act it out. Read the story of the ten lepers (Luke 17:11-19). Remind your children that Jesus was pleased with the one man who returned to give thanks for being healed. Provide rags for bandages and let your children play the roles of the lepers and Jesus.

4. Make some noise. Look up the story of the Israelites' celebration after the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt (Neh. 12:27-46). Talk about the instruments they used and the two great choirs that marched atop the walls to the temple. Your kids will love the idea of the joyous, active "thanksgiving" that could be heard "far away" (Neh. 12:43b).

Put together a home-grown band using real or handmade instruments. Practice joyful praise songs and march around the "walls".

5. Think differently. Corrie ten Boom's book The Hiding Place (Bantam) teaches a great lesson in thankfulness. Share Corrie's story with your kids, pointing out her struggle to be "thankful in all things." She even thanked God for fleas in her barracks. She later learned that the fleas kept the guards away and allowed Corrie and others to study the Bible undisturbed.

6. Create a chain reaction. Let your children make a God is Good chain. Gather scissors, stickers, pencils, crayons, glue and construction paper. Cut the paper in strips and ask your kids to think about the many ways God is good. Have them write or draw these attributes on the strips, then connect them to form a chain and hang it in a place where it will remind your family of God's goodness.

FOCUS ON BLESSINGS

Choose a family project for November that will draw your focus to God's goodness.

7. Make a Blessing Basket. Place a pretty fall basket containing a pencil and pad of paper in an easy-to-reach location. Throughout the month, encourage family members to jot down ways God has blessed them. Younger children can draw or cut out pictures from magazines. Read these together and give God thanks each day or set aside some time on Thanks giving Day.

8. Trim a Tree of Thanks. Draw and cut out a large paper tree with lots of loose leaves in autumn colors. Mount the tree in a prominent place and put the leaves nearby in a box with glue and markers. Ask your family to write things they are thankful for on the leaves, filling the tree by the end of the month. Have your kids consider the following question:

"If I could keep only the gifts I've thanked God for today, what would I have?" Ask younger children: "What do you want to thank God for today?" Encourage your family to add to the tree daily.

9. Host a Thank You Contest. Make a colorful chart containing the names of family members. Talk about the importance of expressing gratitude to God and those around us. Throughout the month of November, every time a person is thanked, he or she can put a sticker beside the name of the family member who said thank-you. At the end of the month, the biggest "thanksgiver" receives a small reward.

SERVE UP A MEMORY

Since you can't escape the food factor, bring an eternal perspective to the table. Consider adding these touches to the family feast:

10. Find your seat. Have the children make a placecard for each place setting. On one side, write names of guests and family; on the other, type a Scripture verse about being thankful. Let each person read a verse before the blessing.

11. Encourage sharing. Place a paper leaf at each place with an "assignment" written on it. Each person adds to the festivities by completing their assignment. Assignments might include:

Read Psalm 100.

Share a Thanksgiving memory (use this on several paper leaves).

Sing a Thanksgiving song (good for pre schoolers).

Lead the group in a praise chorus (have copies of the lyrics available).

Say the blessing for our meal.
12. Count your blessings. Follow a tradition started by Focus on the Family's James Dobson. Place several kernels of corn at each plate. At the start of the meal, drop the kernels in a basket as you each give thanks for God's goodness in the previous year—one thanksgiving for each kernel. Candy corn works well for this, too!

13. Set the mood. Give an unlit votive candle to each person. Begin by lighting your own candle and thanking God for specific blessings. Then, continue the process around the table until all the candles are lit, making sure to keep the flames away from small children. Lead your family in a candlelight service of thanksgiving.

VA Kids is a site for children K-5th created by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It has sections such as: "Cool Facts about Veterans", "Games and Activities", and "About the Flag". It is a really neat website and I think it will be very informational for your children even if they are just older pre-school age.

You're about to have a whole bunch of candy in your house! And you do not need a child sugared up on candy do you? So, whatcha gonna do? Well, I saw an idea in Family Fun Magazine that may just help you out.

1. Designate one or two pieces of candy per day to a Thanksgiving countdown calendar. Pretty self explanatory- you can just create some sort of calendar to countdown to Thanksgiving and the idea is that the kids get one piece of candy per day as they countdown. Be creative!
2. Any other candy leftover you can use to experiement- melt it, put it in water, sprite, etc. see what happens to it. Messy but it gets rid of the candy and they learn something too!

In our family, our prayer is that through our actions, we will show B the love of Christ. In turn, we pray she will share the love of Christ with others. We try and be intentional- creatively integrating opportunities for B to see ways she can have an impact on the world.
One of the things we our blessed by is sponsoring a Compassion Child. Our child is Fabiola and she lives in Leon, Nicaragua. Compassion International provides children with school uniforms, meals, tutoring, spiritual direction, and the support of someone who cares for them and writes them letters. Compassion prepares children to :

Follow Jesus Christ in faith and deed as part of their spiritual training
Support themselves and share with others in need as part of their economic training

In August we had the joy of meeting Fabiola while we were in Nicaragua on a mission trip. I can't describe to you what it felt like to see the hand of God at work in Fabiola's life and to know that in a small way, we are a part of it! As B grows, I know she will get involved by writing letters and coloring pictures for Fabiola just like Fabiola does for us! Maybe one day, they can even meet each other.

I hope that you will pray about sponsoring a child. It doesn't cost that much and the impact eternally is priceless! Check it out!

Gulf World Review

Last Friday B and I headed to Gulf World to see what it has to offer for the little ones! Gulf World is located on Front Beach Road and has been a popular tourist spot for many years. Normally, it is pricey at $24.75 for an adult ticket and $15.07 for kids 5-11 years old. But this month is locals month, so with your driver's license you can get in for 50% the regular price. For $12, I thought we'd give it a shot.

*My disclaimer for this post is that I grew up very close to Disney and Sea World and am therefore very partial and spoiled.

We were meeting up with some people so we headed straight to the dolphin show. It is in an outdoor stadium in the back of the park. The first inconvenience was no visible stroller parking. If you want to cater to children, you've GOT TO have stroller parking. I ended up leaving our stroller in front of the seats in a section no one sat in. As a result, our stroller was soggy after the show because it was sitting in the "splash zone". No good!
The dolphin show was ok. I mean, it's cute dolphins, so that makes it a good show no matter what. But it wasn't anything spectacular and it took a lot to keep B focused on the show and not the endless stairs she could climb. There was a lot of "dead time" and when dealing with a short attention span, that is another "no good" in my book. But still, B "oohed" and "ahhed" and I got to see dolphins (my favorite animal).

After the dolphin show, we wandered through a room full of birds. It was ok- Bethany liked the birds. Then we grabbed a snack and followed the group we were with into the magic show. I knew Bethany wouldn't be interested but I decided to check it out anyways. We lasted about ten minutes (Bethany was more interested in playing with the people around us than the show) and ten minutes was all I needed- I wasn't impressed. Maybe it got better after we left.......

It was still another hour or so until the next show (we couldn't stay that long though due to her nap schedule). So we wandered around and looked at the other exhibits (penguins, sting rays, sea lions, etc.). We would have gone down to see the sharks but there is no ramp to the viewing area and again, no stroller parking so we skipped it. The exhibits were good, there just aren't very many of them.

Tom and I encountered that problem when we visited Gulf World BC(Before Child). There aren't enough exhibits to keep you busy while you wait for the next show. However, when I went with Tom, we saw the high dive show which was pretty good- probably my favorite thing there.

All in all, I would say skip it, especially parents of young children. There are just better ways to spend your money and paying full price to go would be really not worth it. Elementary children might like it better if you can keep them entertained in between the shows.

Pros: Nice discount for locals month, dolphins are cute, high dive show is cool, friendly staff
Cons: Not stroller/handicap acessible, not enough exhibits, too pricey

Chick Fil A Free Food

Two things I love as a mom- free food and an indoor playground. Sorry I didn't get this out earlier in the week but you have two more days left to get free breakfast at Chick-Fil-A on the beach. Thursday, October 7 you get a free sausage biscuit and Friday you can get a free chicken biscuit. And then you can let your children play in the playground! Yay!

Another Grocery Store Tip

I was having a problem keeping B occupied and stationary while I brought in the grocery bags from the car. So here's my tip. Put a laundry basket in the car and load your grocery bags into the laundry basket. That way when you get home, you can plop the children down with a toy and only have one trip to make out to the car. You could also use a suitcase with wheels (easier on the arms)- that way you could even carry the baby and just roll the suitcase of groceries with you at the same time!

Junior Museum of Bay County

Our inaugural activity review for "The Panama City Playground" will be the Junior Museum of Bay County. Why is that first? Well, because it was already on the schedule when I thought up this blog. A scientific approach, I know...

B and I headed to the museum this morning to meet a friend for our playdate. Both of them are pretty young. They had a GREAT time. We were there at 10am when the museum opened and we were greeted warmly by the receptionist. It was $5 per person and children 1 year and younger were free (they may or may not have let B in for free just because they're that nice).

The museum has several rooms for children to roam through including: reptile exhibits, science, music, history, and imaginative play. After a quick stop at the boat to play with the life preservers ( I am sure this area would be a blast for older preschoolers), B quickly made her way to the toddler area. Her younger pal made a stop in the pretend grocery store to check out the fruit and veggies (his momma is teaching him well) and then joined B.

This section, built specifically for the youngest museum goers has a ball pit and soft climbing area, a play tree house, books, mirrors and a few other great toys for toddlers. It was so amusing to the kids that my friend and I actually had time to have a conversation while they played- ahhhh, adult conversation (the drug of choice for stay at home moms!). Other highlights for our little ones include the nature walk (leaves are incredibly entertaining when you're new to the world) and the sand play area outside. Most of the other exhibits are geared towards older kids but look like they would be fun.

Pros: Fairly inexpensive for a small family especially with the under one are free rule. Great toddler area! Good variety of exhibits- including exhibits for younger and older children. Interesting for parents too. Chance to be in "nature". Helpful staff. Wore the children out.

Cons: Could be cleaner for my taste and I'm not really a germ phobe. Some of the exhibits just look like they need to be scrubbed really well or replaced. $5 per person adds up if you have a gaggle but they do have membership rates so check those out.

All in all, I would recommend this place- it is especially good if you have children of different ages as there is something for everyone. Go with a friend- it is a great place to let the kids play and catch up with your friend!

Discovering orange

I have made several attempts at letting B paint, but she's just too little still. But maybe your litle ones will like this. I believe learning is best done when you discover a new concept on your own. Part of being a good parent is creating environments and experiences that encourage new discoveries. This was my attempt at the discovery that red and yellow mixed together create orange. Try it with your kids sometime!

1. Gather supplies: art smock, wipes, paints, paper

2. Get it all set up for child in an area that can get messy

3. Put two color dobs on paper and let them go at it

3. If they like it, you can talk about colors and how they mix. If not (see pic below), try again in a few months.

Grocery Store Hunt

Have trouble getting your child through the grocery store without a meltdown? My little one is too little for this but when I was a nanny this is something I did regularly and it really worked.

Grocery Store Hunt

Materials Needed:

Magazines, ads, etc. with pictures of grocery items
Children's scissors
Glue stick
Paper
Clipboard
Marker
String to attach marker to clipboard

1. Provide children with ads from the grocery store, food magazines, etc. Anything with pictures of grocery items will do.
2. Help them choose, cut, and paste pictures of grocery items onto their own "grocery list." If they can write, this activity can be a good way to practice spelling. Help them write out the words that correspond to the pictures they choose.
3. Secure their list to a clipboard, attach a washable marker using a string to the board (you don't want to be picking up the marker a million times during the trip), and bring it with you to the store.
4. The game is to see how many of the items on their list they can find. They can mark of the items as they see them. Let them to choose one or two of those items to add to the cart.
5. Variations to try: Have them write out or discuss with them the cost of each item as they find it. Talk about the colors of the items. Talk about the food groups. You can also do this activity in the car- just have them cut out pictures of things you might see from the car window.

Garage Sale for Missions

Garage sales are GREAT places to find inexpensive toys and clothes for your kids! Why pay full price when you can find great stuff at a fraction of the cost? So, drop a few old or forgotton toys off at Goodwill and stop at a garage sale this weekend to get something "new" for your little one to play with! I've got a great one for you right here:

This Saturday, October 3, head to Lynn Haven UMC (before you head to Pier Park for the fall festival) and support missions. They are hosting a garage sale to raise money for mission work in India. The sale will be at the church in the gravel parking lot. Hours are 7am-1pm.

I'm still debating on whether to go to this or not. I am sure it would be a lot of fun for older kids but B would probably be just as amsused if I danced and sang for her at home and that doesn't cost a penny. Likes, Dislikes, and Milestones

Every so often I take the time to write down the things B likes, doesn't like and the things she has learned to do. I just keep it in a file on the computer. Someday I'll scrapbook them......maybe..... well probably when it's clear this type of computer is obsolete and the new type of computer will no longer be able to hold those files. But I digress....
ANYWAYS...
Where was I? Oh yes, I write these things down so I won't forget the little things, like how cute her little toes are, or how she leans over the back of the couch shouting "daddy" in anticipation of his arrival home from work. Someday, I know that I will be glad I kept a record of those things. Especially on the days when I ask how her day went and all I get is "Fine."

So, if you've got a moment, take time to record some of your child's likes, dislikes and milestones. Here's an example ~~because I like to write about how adorable my daughter is~~ in case you need one - just a snippet from when Bethany was five months old:

"She puts everything in her mouth (she likes to chew on mommy’s hair and daddy’s finger). She will grab the cup we’re drinking and pull it to her mouth (we always let her have a sip-usually Gatorade). She also will lick our faces- especially noses."

See, even in posting this I was reminded of how she used to lick our faces- so funny! She no longer licks- this is probably a good thing.

Pretty sure she is licking my face- gotta love her!

How bout your first name, number and ages of kids, and your favorite PC activity or at home activity (if you live out of town or can't think of anything in PC). And tell us something about you that has nothing to do with you as a mother/dad/grandparent.

So, you already know I'm Katie (Kathryn if you must know), and I've got B. My favorite activity, for sure, is going out on one of the dolphin cruises (Captain Anderson's Marina). I am pretty in love with dolphins! Something about me that has nothing to do with being a mom is that I play in the Panama City POPS.

Library Fall Family Fun Night

Just an FYI to help you avoid a major party foul (ex. scary dream where you show up to party dressed like the tin man from Wizard of Oz only to realize it's actually NOT a costume party): Kids don't usually dress up for this event- it's a bit early to bust out the costume. Besides, you wouldn't want to get the goodness that is Dave's snowball on the brand new spiderman costume would you?
